History
-Selkirk
-Selkirk Settlement formed earlier than OTL (in 1807), and is rather more successful because he is able to send more
-with Gaelic-speaking Presbyterian minister
-booms further, gets renewed immigrants over 1820s due to famine in Europe pushing Highland Scots out, Selkirk Settlement becomes a real town in this era
-following British Wars > Popular Revolution (1827-9), Hudson's Bay Company loses monopoly, Selkirk grant turned into Colony of Assiniboia in 1834
-deeply tied to the United States because of St. Paul being there
-with Upper Canada desiring control over it but not getting it and railroad being a boondoggle
-after American Presidents > 1845-1852 Daniel Webster (Unionist) † creates Pembina Territory, funds canal between Mississippi and Red River which allows trade down watershed network
-ties colony deeply with Pembina
-Prairies
-in 1877, Assiniboia secures transfer of all lands south of 54th parallel to the Rockies
-as payment from British for going back on treaty
-Saskatchewan Valley Metis rebel in name of autonomy, they form provisional government in opposition to this successfully
-attempts of them to negotiate joining entirely rebuffed
-Upper Canada finds it hard to send regiments especially because of treaty having been abjured
-requires taking them from Horseshoe up to Lake Superior, then across a road, then to the Lake of the Woods, then across a road, then to Selkirk, then across the Prairies
-prior to that, Assiniboian settlers armed, try to fight Saskatchewan Valley rebels, with only partial success
-and US is grossly reluctant to accept sending regiments that way
-but by 1879 is able to send troops up to Selkirk, they cross to Saskatchewan Valley, rebels defeated
-causes massive scandal with Lower Canada
-with rise of settlement in Saskatchewan Valley, issues bill renaming Upper Canada to Canada, gets recognized
-with Saskatchewan Valley Rebellion (1877-9) having passed a lot of American settlers move northwards
-sees quite a bit of success in this era due to the US still recovering from Liberty and Union War (1868-76)
-and its immigrant-heavy reputation in decline in this era
-"rain follows the plow" ideas see increasing levels of adherence here as climate improves from prev observations
-1880s settlement continues apace
-then comes 1890s drought and this population gets fucked by dust blizzards
-something of a preview of the Polvamiento
-settlers flee northwards into Saskatchewan Valley, or elsewhere
-still, after 1900, settlement continues apace
-helped by rising number of railroads
-then comes 1930s, comes Polvamiento
-many settlers come to city or flee elsewhere
